Consistent daily care of your skin and your well-being is the key to a healthy glow. Whatever your age or your skin type, your beauty can shine through.

First, make protection a priority with these...

Three vital tips for healthy skin.

Practice Safe Sun. Winter or summer, skin needs protection from ultraviolet rays. In warm weather, slather on the sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and avoid the sun between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m….at least as much as possible. In winter, be sure to apply sunscreen before skiing, hiking, or other outdoor fun. Nothing says wrinkles like years in the sun. Read more: Why Wear Sunscreen?

Don't Smoke! It is devastating to health... and it causes wrinkles. Smoking decreases oxygen, narrows blood vessels, and damages elastic fibers (translation...sagging skin and tons of wrinkles).

Avoid toxic chemicals in skin care products. Check labels. Nontoxic, natural skin care products promote healthy, beautiful skin...and they are kind to your body.
Daily routine for healthy skin care.
Use mild, natural soaps or cleansers and warm water. Your face needs only your fingertips and a gentle massage. Lightly pat dry. Treat your own skin as you would a baby's.
Most skin types benefit from daily moisturizing. A pure and natural skin care product is always the best choice. Skip this step if your skin is oily or prone to acne.

Healthy skin begins within.
Beauty and health are inseparable. As a visible organ, your skin is a mirror of your overall wellbeing.

Promote optimum health with a holistic approach. Care for the entire package of "you"...mind, body, and spirit. You will feel better and look better.

Concentrate on these six areas daily...

Water: Drink 8-10 refreshing glasses of filtered or spring water. The benefits of drinking water for your skin and health are numerous.

Nutrition: Enjoy luscious fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of colors. Add a variety of appealing whole grains. Choose high quality, low fat protein sources. Cold water fish such as salmon, herring, and mackerel provide skin healthy Omega 3 fatty acids. Read more about healthy foods for your skin.

Vitamins: Take a multi-vitamin daily for good measure.

Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours of uninterrupted beauty rest. This is so hard with a busy life, but your face always reveals a lack of sleep.

Exercise: Aim for at least 30 minutes most days of the week. I find enjoyable activity is the secret to consistent exercise.

Stress management: Free your mind with activities that bring joy and pleasure to your busy life. Relax, have fun! It will show in your youthful appearance

Healthy Foods for Your Skin

Choose healthy foods for your skin ... create a glowing, radiant complexion!

Your skin and your health are inseparable. A healthy diet is critical to healthy skin. Eat for optimum health and it will show in your complexion.

Healthy Foods for Your Skin... which are best?
There is so much confusion today about food. Every time you turn on the news or open a magazine, there is another diet, another study, another warning. Where does the truth lie?

New studies and new findings abound in the world of diet recommendations. Fads come and go. The basic guidelines from the most reputable sources, however, remain the same.

A diet of healthy food for your skin and your overall well-being consists of a variety of whole, fresh foods ...

Fruits and vegetables
Whole grains
Low fat, high quality protein
Nuts and seeds
Beans and legumes
Healthy oils
Make sure you include a good supply of Omega 3 fatty acids.
Emphasize the following when choosing healthy foods for your skin...

Fruits and Vegetables
Make these healthy gems the star of your meals. Pile your plate high with a colorful variety. They are loaded with health enhancing antioxidants. Fruits and Vegetables for Healthy SkinAntioxidants are the miracle components of food that fight damaging free radicals.

Free radicals? Exposure to sunlight, pollution, and other environmental toxins initiate a chemical reaction that results in free radical formation in your body. Excessive amounts can lead to cell damage. This leads to a host of immune problems and disease ... including unhealthy skin!

Your best defense? Antioxidants. Nature provides the perfect antidote to halt free radical development in its tracks. Studies show that antioxidants protect against premature aging. Strengthen your defense system by consuming lots of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables

Fruits and Vegetables for Healthy Skin

Fruits and vegetables for healthy skin? Absolutely! A healthy diet is essential for healthy skin. Fruits and vegetables are fundamental to a healthy eating plan.

Fruits and Vegetables for Healthy SkinNature knows best... enticing us with a beautiful array of colorful, health-enhancing foods. The bright pigments in fruits and vegetables are an indication of their disease fighting capabilities. They are rich in both nutrients and protective antioxidants.

The key to receiving the most benefit? Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables ... for healthy skin and a healthy you!

How can you ensure you consume an array of valuable nutrients? I use "The Color Code" method. Fruits and vegetables divide easily into four color groups. Each group provides unique benefits.

A rainbow of fruits and vegetables for healthy skin

Oranges and Yellows: carrots, sweet potatoes, winter squash, yellow and orange bell peppers ... oranges, tangerines, mangoes, and apricots.

This group provides lots of beta-carotene, a tough free-radical fighter. Vitamin C, highly beneficial to skin, is also prevalent here. Vitamin C promotes and protects collagen. Collagen provides support and elasticity to your skin ... delaying the onset of wrinkles!

Reds: Tomatoes, red peppers, guava, pink grapefruit, papaya, and watermelon (all lycopene-rich)... cranberries, red bell peppers, red onions, and strawberries.

Lycopene is the star antioxidant found in much of the red group. Studies show it may offer protection from the damaging rays of the sun. Numerous other documented benefits, such as reduced risk of heart disease and cancer, come from high consumption of lycopene.

Note: cooked tomatoes release their lycopene more readily than raw. A good excuse for extra tomato sauce on your pasta!

Vitamin C is also abundant in the red group.

Greens: broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, collards, green bell peppers, kale, kiwi, romaine, and spinach.

Vitamin C, folate, and cancer fighting cruciferous vegetables are the all important winners in this group. Eat your greens!

Blues/Purples: Blueberries, blackberries, beets, plums, red grapes, eggplant, and purple cabbage.

Berries and plums contain some of the highest concentrations of antioxidants in the plant kingdom. They are so delicious! These gems make eating fruits for your skin a joy.

Try to include foods from each group every day.

The above list is by no means all-inclusive. A visit down the produce aisle will offer many more choices. Think color and variety. How much should you eat?

Serving size
Aim for 4-5 servings of vegetables and 4-5 servings of fruits daily. I know, that sounds like a lot. But portion size is smaller than you may think.

Vegetables:

½ cup chopped...raw or cooked
1 cup raw leafy vegetables: spinach or lettuce
3/4 cup (6 oz) vegetable 6 oz vegetable juice
Fruits:

½ cup chopped
1 medium fruit: apple, banana, orange, peach
2 small fruits: clementines, kiwis, plums
1 slice (large fruit): melon, pineapple
¼ cup dried fruit: apricots, figs, raisins
¾ cup (6 oz) fruit juice
Enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables for healthy skin. Enhance your health as a bonus. A delicious win win !
